How to Really Get What You Want in Life

How to get what you want in life

Guest post by Onibalusi Bamidele

Life is sweet if we can work out how to get what we really want out of it. Even though it’s not possible to understand everything in life, you can still harness its power to your own advantage.

Many people are unable to get what they want from life not because they can’t, but because they haven’t realized the true power they have to really get what they want – their dream house, car, or anything they hope for.

This isn’t hype. I want to give you practical tips that worked for me. I’ve used the principles here to get several things, even when it seemed almost impossible to get what I wanted.

5 Ways to Get What You Want in Life

1. Know What You Want

It’s dangerous to be uncertain about what you want because it makes it difficult for you to get it. This is the number one mistake many people make. One of the first and most important steps to getting anything you want is having a crystal clear understanding of what it is.

If you want to buy a house, be clear about it, don’t say you want to buy a house today and then say you want to rent a house tomorrow. Getting what you want has a lot to do with your mindset, and there’s no way you can focus on getting something without knowing what you truly want.

Know what you want, focus on one thing and one thing only.

2. Believe You Can Get It

According to Napoleon Hill’s “The Secret”, scientists have discovered that every single human thought affects the universe.

Knowing what you want is one thing, believing you can get it is another thing. There is no point in you wanting to get something if you don’t believe it’s possible. The word “impossible” has limited some people, and is the reason they’ll never get what they want.

One key principle to building up your self belief is by making sure you don’t think about how long it will take or how hard it will be to achieve your goal.

3. Find Out What It Takes to Get It

Knowing what it takes will help you make sure you’re up for the challenge. If you say you want to be the President of the United States you can’t just sit around and expect results to come by themselves.

But if you work hard, know what it takes, and give what it takes, you’ll be amazed at the results.

4. Be Dedicated Towards Getting It

This is another crucial step to getting what you want. Many people say they want something but don’t take action, apply themselves and persevere.

You have to focus longterm and put things in place towards achieving your dreams. Don’t wait to win the lottery before you get the life you want, start contributing towards achieving your dreams now in any way you can to actually make them happen.

Luck only favors those who’ve given their best. You can’t be idle and at the same time expect success to come.

5. Feel As if You Already Have It

This is a very powerful, yet underestimated key to getting your desire. If you dream of being a millionaire start thinking like a millionaire and behave like a millionaire. Your thoughts and behaviours will affect how your life turns out.

Change your thoughts, change your mindset, and believe you can! Think like you already have what you want and skyrocket yourself to new heights of success.

No matter what your hearts desire is you can get it if you adjust your mentality, keep a firm belief, and maintain a clear focus. The mind can bring about great things, and being dedicated and hardworking makes everything easier.

What an inspiration you are as a young entrepreneur! I wish I had known what I REALLY wanted in life when I was young. I think #2 & #5 are actually the most important (Believe and Feel). They’re vital. They keep you in the SPOT(Yes, I’m using Hot Spot terminology), where you literally attract what you want with less effort.

Hi Erin, thanks so much for saying that. Onibalusi is only 16 so and I love that he can inspire us and hope we can do the same for him. Lol, thanks for using the hot spot terminology too. It is a hot spot for young, old, boys, girls and anyone who wants to be the best they can be. Thanks again Erin, it’s a pleasure to have you in the hot spot team contributing your ideas to keep the spot boiling:)

    Hi there,

This is a clear, well explained but simple guide to achieving results. Thank you! #2 can be tricky though because there can be subtle blocks to whether we really believe or not. Sometimes we are not even aware that we disbelieve because it’s so subtle. If we keep working with out mind thought, anything is possible.

Hi Sandra, thanks for getting in fast with your comment, I appreciate that. Onibalusi has written a great post here and I know we can all learn a lot from your amazing wisdom too. Thanks so much for sharing it with us here.

I also struggle with #2 – Believe – but it’s not subtle for me!! I KNOW when I don’t believe. Perhaps it’s the subconscious having a bet each way? You know – if I say it’s unlikely/not going to happen, then if it doesn’t, I won’t be too disappointed!! The 5 steps Onibalusi has given are so simple – but the hard part is putting them into practice!!

    Thanx, Marion

      Exactly Red,

You got it! The hard and most important part is putting it to practice. It doesn’t matter how many formulas for getting things done you know you won’t get any result if you don’t take action!

The first point is the key, I think. Knowing what you want is something that many people do not do. They think they know, but really haven’t put that much thought into it. Also, they don’t pay enough attention to notice when it changes!

    • Onibalusi Bamidele September 24, 2010 at 11:13 pm - Reply

      Exactly Steve,

Many people think they know what they want, but they don’t. Getting what you want has to do with you having a crystal clear understanding of whaqt you want, once that is in place other steps will be easier.

Ah, a subject I know a bit about. Nice summary here. It is essential to imbue our visions with a ‘feeeeeling’ of certainty. These Felt-Visions become the directing center of our lives. These visions inspire us to take action and make our ideals real. Don’t forget… no one can think their way to the top… inspired visions require inspired action.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele September 24, 2010 at 11:21 pm - Reply

      Yeah Rob,

Everything is like a vision but our mind is so powerful and we just have to believe in ourselves that this visions can come true, that they can become a reality.

For me not letting the daily distractions/problems of life get in the way is a real challenge. I can have a few days of really focused thoughts and be getting alot done and then something happens in my business or personal life and I have to start all over again. I printed out this post and am going to try reading it every morning for a month to see if it helps me keep my focus. And Onibalusi your insight is amazing for one so young.
    Thanks Annabel for sharing this.
    Peace
    Annette

      Great Annette,

It is sometimes easy to get sidetracked but If you keep making it clear to your mind that you’ll get what you want it will be easier to deal with that.

Also, I’m glad you loved the post!

    Hi Onibalusi,

I like your inspiration here, well written. #5 is a powerful practice. Be, become. It’s a challenge in the beginning but with practice it feels like you’re acting until you fully assume the role. Fun stuff :)

Thanks for sharing your insight and have a great weekend.

    Ryan

      Exactly Ryan,

If you plan to be a millionaire then stop acting like a beggar, behave like one! Our mindset has a lot to do with our success and if we have a high mindset (and feeling) that we’re great it will be easier to achieve what we want.

      Thanks so much for commenting!

    Hi Onibalusi,
If all sixteen-year olds were as enterprising as you, we’d have a very different world. Well done for synthesizing these bits of wisdom gleaned from The Secret and many other self-help gurus. As an intuitive life coach (for longer than you’ve been alive), I’ve found the root of getting what you want is more than knowing, believing or feeling it. Most people don’t get what they want because at a core level they self-sabotage the results from a feeling of not deserving. Simply put: they don’t love themselves enough.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele September 25, 2010 at 10:30 pm - Reply

      Exactly Layla,

Loving yourself is also very important because it is your love for yourself that will make you take the best actions in your life.

Thanks so much for the nice words!

I strongly believe in # 2. It can be tricky, it can be difficult but it is feasible as long as a person clearly defines the goal. It doesn’t mean you can get it because you believe. You have to work towards it. It might take time and a lot of effort. But it is possible. It is a great post, Onibalusi.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele September 25, 2010 at 10:32 pm - Reply

      Exactly Aloysa,

      Believe it!

There’s even no point in you trying to get something if you don’t believe you can get it.

I’m glad you loved the post :)

This is a very inspirational post Onibalusi. What you have written comes from your convictions which gives you a head start in life. I wish I was as driven as you are when I was your age. #5 Feel As if You Already Have It, is what struck accord with me. Sometimes we come across business opportunities and approach with doubts because we believe such contracts are for the big players.

    Thanks for your inspirational post.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele September 25, 2010 at 10:36 pm - Reply

      You got it Peter!

Many people are limited by their mindset and they feel they’re unworthy of something. Many people can never succeed because they are the ones limiting themselves.

Release yourself! Believe you can, and you’ll be there!

what a great post. I loved what you had to say. someone once said “Be grateful you are in the right place at the right time” so grateful that was me getting to read your post, Onibalusi.

Great advice, and honestly you can’t hear it enough. One thing I’ve found that helps me stay on track is to eliminate the ‘psychic vampires’ in your life. The people who are always negative and suck the life out of you. If you can’t eliminate them, perhaps because they are a relative, at least limit your time with them.
You have to believe and know in your soul you can achieve it. Then open up to the universe and let it in!
Thanks for sage advice from such a young man.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele September 27, 2010 at 9:57 pm - Reply

      Exactly Barbara,

You definitely have to eliminate them since many of them are the ones who contribute to your mental setback.

      Thanks so much for commenting!

Onibalusi, this is a fabulous article. Point#2 is very important to me. If I believe that I can get/do it, I can make others to believe in it too. So if we call it self confidence, this won’t be wrong. Failures are part of life, no matter if we face failure. Don’t lose hope, believe in yourself and success will at your door step.
Onibalusi, you have great self confidence and we believe you can get what you want.

      Sure Imran,

It is of no point if everybody believe in you and you don’t believe in yourself. Take that bold action of faith, believe you’re up to the task and you’re ready to go!

    Hi,
I want to add ask for what you want. Ask for time, information, support and money. People are willing to help and give but don’t or won’t unless they are asked. Love the post about donations for the conference Anabel!

      Sure Tess,

Askin is also very important, and just as you said people are willing to give, it’s only for you to ask!

    Oni.. great post.

Belief is something I lacked for a very long time. It seems so simple, but it takes so much to truly say “I believe I can do this” and start taking action.

I think mental models are everything.

The old saying, “What the mind can conceive, the body can achieve,” has proven itself for me time and again.

    THE ULTIMATE SUCCESS QUESTION

For me, life’s abundance really opened up in a huge way when I asked a different question – shifting from the mindset of ‘how I can get what I want from life’ to…

How can life get what IT really wants from ME?

Just contemplating this question for a few minutes opens up your mind to infinitely bigger resources and possibilities – and get’s the focus off of me accumulating things and experiences, and positions me as a vessel – a pipeline through which the miracle of life can flow in ever increasing amounts.

    Just some thoughts.

    Best to you, Robin :)

      Cool Robin,

I’ve never given your questions any thought before, in fact, this is the first time I am hearing it and I will begin to think about this and see what I come over.

Thanks for reminding me of what I already know, but somehow keep forgetting! Every time I do it though – be clear, believe it is possible, feel it, take action and stay focused – it works! I shouldn’t be surprised, though I often am. Getting a clear picture of what I want is often the hardest, but once I have that, the rest just seems to flow much easier! Thanks again for your post.
