Annabel--thank you for this post. I'm licking my wounds now from an article idea that was rejected. Reading your thoughts here have really helped me. I like the idea of celebrating my rejection as a sign that I'm putting myself and my work out there--that's something to be proud of!

I enjoyed this article, but I must disagree with one thing. People do indeed say those things to mail people and clerks.

In fact, I have personally complained about my mail person on several occasions because she keeps carlessly tossing mail into the ditch next to the mailbox, and I really, really do not like her work.

And I have been a clerk, and thought it less common, I have certainly had people make it clear to me that they were not happy with my work (usually because they were spoiled and rude and expected my to act as their slave).

[...] I also gained enough confidence to send my writing to other blogs and newspapers. There were the inevitable rejections (it’s a writer’s rite of passage) but I took heart from what I’d written about having grit and kept on trying until I succeded. It worked.
Wonderful article! You really covered so many pertinent points that all writers (and I consider myself one) need to keep in mind!

I am preparing to launch a website early next year and I still ask myself sometimes why I would want to put myself out there! I guess it's just in the DNA or whatever of certain people.

This is one article that won't be sent back! :)

Hi Annabel .. we all have successes and failures all the time and our chosen profession, or dream will have more of each - you've been successful to get where you are now - carry on building that dream.

Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol very quickly in November 1843 and self published by the 19th December 1843 - (dates approx right!) - he was in the middle of writing Martin Chuzzlewit at the time -

anything can happen .. 2010 is around the corner ..

Dave - Maybe we need to have a tough outer shell with a gooey soft inside:)

Broderick - That's my theory, that the more it happens the less it hurts! It's got to be true if you think about it!
