I just found your blog today through Life In A Pink Fibro and I am so pleased. Your insights are so thoughfully expressed and like Kara, I feel you could be describing my life.
I've spent the last 11 years (since having my first child) with the constant terror of falling into the abyss or poised on the precipice. There have been many moments spent desperately clinging onto the sides and others where I've been unable to stop myself from slipping down.
Although I'm now on antidepressants again, I know that I'm not doing some of the things that can make a difference...your post is a good wake up call for me. Thanks :)

As someone who suffered from experiencing clinical depression resulting from Tinnitus (loud loud ringing in the ears) I would say that is an excellent summarization of what one must do to win the battle. Great post!

Oh Annabel. You have just described my life. It could have been me you were writing about in your blog. I am a mum of four boys and I feel so consumed by them and their demands that I have become numb to life. My life has become about feeding them, cleaning up after them, cleaning the house, more food, more laundry, driving them around. more food. I have forgotten who I am and I have no idea what ignites me or what my interest and passions are. I love my boys dearly but when I look at them I just see more work and more tiredness...there is little if any joy. I have felt this way since my youngest child was born about 4 years ago. I feel lost in life and every day is about survival and then it starts all over again the next day. Thanks for your blog and for showing me I'm not the only one who has ever felt like this. It is crippling.

Thanks alot for this blog. I found this blog interesting and very helpful. It really made me think about me and how i can help someone with depression. I have a friend that had got dumped and he was just soo depressed and didnt talk much (and he usually cant staop talking) and after reading this, it made me understand a lot about it and that i might help. It is also interesting because i am doing this for my class and it really helped and made me understand how important it is to be optemistic, active, greatful, and active in order to prevent depression.

Lian - So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. When I was diagnosed as depressed it made me even more depressed. You've obviously seen a doctor so that's good. If you haven't you must.

Re pills I would say it depends how bad your depression is. If you are severly depressed and even thinking of hurting yourself in anyway you need anti-depressants. Depression is life-threatening and must be taken seriously. Medication saves lives and makes you feel better. You owe it to yourself and the friends and family who love you to take care of yourself.

If you are moderately depressed you can try other methods first if you prefer. I recommend regular exercise. Preferably daily. I use this to keep me on an even keel. St. John's Wort is supposed to work but I've never tried it. There are other natural methods you can try but if the depression isn't going away or easing up after 4 weeks take the pills. I only needed them for 6 months. They work, they aren't addictive. Yes, there is still a social stigma attached but the funny thing is that when I went on anti-depressants I wasn't depressed any more. Take care of yourself Lian. I hope you have some family and friends you can confide in and that you will go back to the doctor if you don't get better soon. My biggest regret about my depresssion is that I didn't go on the anti-depressants sooner.

Looking on the bright side it's great you've been diagnosed because now you can work out what caused your depression, how it got so bad and how you can avoid it in future. I read heaps of books about depression and that helped me too. And this is no substitute for anti-depressants but do focus on things in life that lift your spirits (and avoid those that get you down). There are some ideas I use in my post 101 Ways To Feel Happy: http://www.getinthehotspot.com/101-ways-to-feel-happy/

Annabel. this advice is very valuable to me, I have just been diagnosed with depression too.

I wanted to know, do you really think pills are essential for recovery?
